10 Chrome keyboard shortcuts that make surfing easier

Chrome logoChrome, the new kid on the block, is fast. It has a spartan UI, too, which no doubt makes it feel faster -- but at a cost! Chrome, like IE9, has all of its juicier features hidden behind two or three mouse clicks. Having a lightning-fast JavaScript engine is great, but by moving your hand to the mouse you destroy any semblance of actual efficiency.

If you really want to make the most of Chrome's speed, what you need is is a bevy of keyboard shortcuts. Check them out!

  • Alt+F or Alt+E -- Open the Wrench (Tools) menu (you can then use the arrow keys to navigate it...)
  • Ctrl+Shift+B -- Toggles the Bookmarks Bar on and off
  • Ctrl+D -- Bookmark your current Web page
  • Ctrl+Shift+D -- Bookmarks all of your open Web pages in one folder
  • Ctrl+J -- Opens the Downloads tab
  • Shift+Esc -- Opens the 'Task Manager', which you can use to close errant tabs/processes
  • Ctrl+Shift+J -- Opens the Chrome Developer Tools (which are surprisingly good!)
  • Ctrl+L -- Selects your current page's URL (and puts the cursor in the address bar)
  • Ctrl+Backspace -- Deletes one word/phrase to the left of your cursor in the address bar
  • Ctrl+G -- Finds the next instance of your search term (Ctrl+F!) Ctrl+Shift+G finds the previous instance
  • Ctrl+U -- View the source of your current page
  • Ctrl+R -- The same as F5 (might be faster for some people to type)
  • Ctrl+1(2, 3, 4, etc) -- Switch to the tab designated by the number (from the left)
  • Ctrl+Shift+T -- Re-open the most recently closed tab
Mac users, check out the list on Google's own Chrome support pages. Linux users, your shortcuts are the same as Windows!

Internet Explorer 9 tips for power users from Microsoft itself

Not too long ago, we shared some of the most useful keyboard shortcuts for Internet Explorer 9. Now, the folks at Microsoft have compiled a whole slew of tips for IE9 users, from novices to seasoned surfers.

There are four categories at the moment -- Faster ways to get to your websites, Top keyboard shortcuts, Change and manage search providers, and Manage add-ons -- and there's also a good resource of videos that can walk you (or a newbie friend) through IE9's core features.

Most of the 'power tips' are fairly light on details at the moment -- the keyboard shortcut page only has seven shortcuts! -- but we're sure, by the time the browser is released, that it will grow into a sizable and comprehensive resource, just like the Windows 7 pages.

In the meantime, you'll learn more from reading our IE9 guide.

Mobility Reigns Supreme at GDC

Every year, hordes of video game professionals and wannabe industry insiders flock to San Francisco for the Game Developers Conference. It's usually more focused on the professional, business side of the industry, but even though it's not filled with the glitz and glamor of some of the industry's other big trade shows, it's a good early indicator of what will be big for the rest of the year.

Nokia C7 with T-Mobile user's manual hits FCC: is this the Tiger?

Rumors have been circulating the past few days that Nokia would be teaming up with T-Mobile to release the Symbian^3-powered C7 -- right on the heels of the Nuron 2's possible cancellation -- as the Tiger. Well, here's some fuel for the fire: a version of the C7 with AWS 3G support and mentions of T-Mobile in the attached user's manual just showed up in the FCC. Interestingly, there's absolutely no sign of T-Mobile branding on the phone itself, but it's possible Nokia's prototype here simply didn't have the final silkscreens applied. Of course, plenty of devices get FCC approval without ever seeing the light of day -- but it's a sign. Who's buying?

Mac OS X Lion Time Machine capable of 'Local Snapshots' without external hard drive

OS X Lion Time Machine local snapshots
9to5 Mac has uncovered another cool feature in OS X Lion: Apple's back up tool, Time Machine, will support backups to an internal hard drive.

Dubbed 'Local Snapshots,' it sounds like it will be very similar to Versions, another new feature in OS X Lion that keeps track of changes to documents, and lets you revert to older versions. Local Snapshots, on the other hand, will take a snapshot of every modified file on your hard drive every hour. It sounds like it could drain an awful lot of system resources (CPU time and hard drive space), but we'll have to wait and see.

If anything, it just sounds like this is a convenience measure more than anything else: we should make daily backups, but plugging in an external hard drive every night is a pain in the ass. With Local Snapshots, you can go a few days without plugging in -- and when you finally do, Time Machine will copy all of your local snapshots to the external drive.

Just In Time For SXSW, Foursquare Ups The Game And Adds Recommendations

We're now just days away from SXSW. And a service that launched there two years ago and made a name for itself last year, is aiming to make another splash this year: Foursquare. The service will tonight launch an updated version of their app, 3.0, which will contain a number of feature upgrades. Chief among them: a new "Explore" section, new types of deals, and a revamped leaderboard for points earned in the app. Yes, Foursquare is putting some fun back into the game element of the service.
