Immersion releases SDK to put haptics in Android, helps smartphones move what their makers gave them

About a month ago, we told you about Immersion's MOTIV dev platform to design Android apps with tactile feedback, and today its release has finally arrived. The SDK comes with predesigned haptic effects, sample code, and the ability to tweak the duration and intensity of the feedback -- allowing developers to perfectly tailor the amount of shake in your groove thang. Interested parties can hit up the source link for the SDK download and start indulging in the haptic dark arts immediately.

Google's Android cloud music sync already works on hacked app

A while back, an .APK installer for an updated Android Music App was yanked out from the digital aether and put on display. Unfortunately, it was a little too force-close-happy for our liking. A little volatility has never derailed the enthusiastic testers at XDA before, though, so we weren't surprised to read that several users had recently discovered something very cool about the app.

After checking setting up the app to stream music, it quietly begins uploading your library to Google's cloud (you should receive an account authorization prompt first).

There are plenty of unknowns at the moment -- little details, like where exactly the music is being stored. Given that Google stashes all our Chrome sync goodies in Docs storage, we suspect the Android Music App would drop its payload there, too.

If you've taken the plunge and played with the leaked Music App's sync feature, share your experience in the comments!

ComScore: Android leapfrogs BlackBerry among US smartphone subscribers to take first place in market share

Last time we checked in with ComScore's report on smartphone platform market share among US subscribers three months ago, Android was doing a little happy dance as it overtook iOS for the number two spot overall. Well, the cuddly green bots have self-replicated yet again, enough to overtake RIM this time thanks in part to a 5.4 percent decline on BlackBerry's part (down to 30.4 percent in January) coupled with a 7.7 percent boost on the Android side, moving up to 31.2 percent. We imagine ComScore's next report -- covering the period through March -- will see a little boost on the iOS side thanks to Verizon's iPhone launch, but RIM's knight in shining armor might be further out; we still don't know when QNX-based phones are going to happen, after all, and devices like the Monaco don't really seem like cure-alls.

TweetDeck teases iOS update, promises "a bucketful of magic"

Tweetdeck iOS UpdateTweetDeck has posted some news about its upcoming iOS update. The new TweetDeck will bring with it all of the features from its Android app like and the company promises it has "built in a whole bucketful of magic."

The update will launch in a couple of weeks, and TweetDeck says it will "raise the bar" for iOS apps in general. There's also some good news for those of you attending SXSW: TweetDeck will be on the ground giving hands-on time with the new app, and it will also be giving away 50 invites to lucky testers.

Predictably (for a social media app), the blog post closes with a subtle shoutout to Charlie Sheen's continued #winning.

Man in Gap is an addictive, simple Time Waster

maningap
Man in Gap is not about a guy trying to find his way around a Gap store; the gap is quite literal here, as you can see in the screenshot.

Basically, each level is composed of a ceiling and a floor, which snap together quite suddenly. As can be expected, when that happens and you're caught in-between, you're squished to a very thin line of pixels. Not so good.

What makes it even worse is that the ceiling and the floor mostly interlock: They're like two pieces in a zipper, and where the ceiling has a "peak" the floor usually has a "valley" that meshes with it. You can see what I mean if you look at the jagged line in the screenshot - that's the contour of the floor and ceiling.

Lucky for you, there are one or two places in each level where the ceiling doesn't quite meet the floor. Your job is to quickly find those places (with your eyes only) and get to them before the level snaps shut. It takes about two-three seconds every time, so it's very fast. And every level has a different terrain, so you never get used to it.

Zero plot, minimal controls, and tons of fun. Really addictive, at least for me. I love the soundtrack, too - it's a nice guitar track with some hardcore distortion.

3 Smash Movie Apps for iPhone

Apps come and go, as any iOS user knows, but everyone has core apps tucked away that get consistent use. When it comes to the land of movies, there are three apps that stand head and shoulders above the rest: IMDb, Flixster, and Netflix. For me, these three apps actually get used consistently.

Nyoombl Slips Back Into Stealth To Create A Hybrid Of Skype And YouTube

If you've seen the name Nyoombl before, it's for one of two reasons. First, it's a really weird way to spell a word that sounds like "Nimble". Or second, they launched at DEMO last spring as one of the 65 startups. At the time, they were working on a dead-simple solution for videoconferencing on your television. But that space is both tricky and now crowded with the likes of Cisco. So about five months ago, founder Oladayo Olagunju decided it was time for a don't-call-it-a-pivot-pivot. He decided to take what he had learned about the video conferencing space and transfer it over to a new, unexplored area. And his team has been working hard on this new Nyoombl ever since. But it's not ready yet. And Olagunju is reluctant to share much about their plans until it's ready. But here's what we do know: it's going to be a completely new service that's a sort of hybrid of Skype and YouTube. In other words, it will allow any two people to take a video conversation and share it with the world, for all to see on the web. But think: debates and interviews, rather than straight up chats. "We are a broadcasting technology company, not a communications tool," Olagunju says.
