10 Chrome keyboard shortcuts that make surfing easier

Chrome logoChrome, the new kid on the block, is fast. It has a spartan UI, too, which no doubt makes it feel faster -- but at a cost! Chrome, like IE9, has all of its juicier features hidden behind two or three mouse clicks. Having a lightning-fast JavaScript engine is great, but by moving your hand to the mouse you destroy any semblance of actual efficiency.

If you really want to make the most of Chrome's speed, what you need is is a bevy of keyboard shortcuts. Check them out!

  • Alt+F or Alt+E -- Open the Wrench (Tools) menu (you can then use the arrow keys to navigate it...)
  • Ctrl+Shift+B -- Toggles the Bookmarks Bar on and off
  • Ctrl+D -- Bookmark your current Web page
  • Ctrl+Shift+D -- Bookmarks all of your open Web pages in one folder
  • Ctrl+J -- Opens the Downloads tab
  • Shift+Esc -- Opens the 'Task Manager', which you can use to close errant tabs/processes
  • Ctrl+Shift+J -- Opens the Chrome Developer Tools (which are surprisingly good!)
  • Ctrl+L -- Selects your current page's URL (and puts the cursor in the address bar)
  • Ctrl+Backspace -- Deletes one word/phrase to the left of your cursor in the address bar
  • Ctrl+G -- Finds the next instance of your search term (Ctrl+F!) Ctrl+Shift+G finds the previous instance
  • Ctrl+U -- View the source of your current page
  • Ctrl+R -- The same as F5 (might be faster for some people to type)
  • Ctrl+1(2, 3, 4, etc) -- Switch to the tab designated by the number (from the left)
  • Ctrl+Shift+T -- Re-open the most recently closed tab
Mac users, check out the list on Google's own Chrome support pages. Linux users, your shortcuts are the same as Windows!

Electric car sales watch: 281 Volts and 67 Leafs sold in US during February

Neither Chevrolet nor Nissan have felt proud enough of their EV sales numbers to list them on their latest press releases, but our colleagues over at Autoblog Green have dug those numbers up anyhow. They make for dispiriting reading if you're an electric car well-wisher, as the Volt's sales declined from January's tally of 321 to an even less impressive 281, while the Leaf closed February with only 67 US sales, down 20 on last month. Upon seeing their previous numbers, we postulated that both cars are suffering from constrained supply, which is likely still the case, but it feels ironic to us that electric vehicles, whose driving experience offers instant torque, are taking their sweet time to rev up their sales.

Privalia Raises $123.4 Million, Buys German Online Fashion Retailer ?Dress for Less?

Privalia is very serious about becoming a major private online sales club on a global scale, kicking up its European presence up a notch with the acquisition of Germany's online clothing and apparel retailer Dress for Less. The site was acquired from Palamon Capital Partners, a pan-European private equity firm, and Privalia has disclosed that it raised 88 million euros ($123.4 million) in new equity financing from General Atlantic, Highland Capital Partners, Index Ventures and Insight Ventures Partners as part of the transaction. With the acquisition, Privalia has expanded its geographic reach to Germany (it was already operational in Spain, Italy, Mexico and Brazil) but also extends its business model into the open site, discount and full price segments. In other words, Privalia is on its way to becoming a global online fashion retail powerhouse.

Fujifilm Instax Mini 50: Smaller, Better, Shinier

Photojojo’s latest novelty-cam is the Fujifilm Instax Mini 50, in handsome piano black. The instant film camera is slimmer and smaller, and yet packs in a few new features. And despite not having Lady Gaga in charge of design and strategy, Fujifilm embarrasses the shamefully poor efforts of Polaroid these last few years. At 4.5 x [...]

Personal Activity Monitor tracks time you spend using desktop apps

personalactivitymonitor
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to turn to RescueTime to figure out how I spend my time online. Then it got too complex, and I stopped using it. Personal Activity Monitor is like a vastly dumbed-down version of RescueTime, and I mean that as a compliment. It's free and bare-bones -- all it does is track what applications you're using and for how long.

A big drawback at this point is that it doesn't integrate with Web browsers to help you analyze how you spend your time on the Web. Still, if your work doesn't require constant Web app use, knowing how long you've used a browser overall might be enough to help you manage your time.

This is far from the only application in this space -- alternatives such as Slife and Chrometa are full-featured and impressive -- but PAM is good option for those who want a nice, simple tracker.
