Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

New Google navigation bar is not 1: it's for managing your online identity

Google's privacy navigation bar
Google's new cross-site navigation bar, which began rolling out last week, is actually a new measure to improve your surfing privacy, and not the 'Google +1' social layer that we've been anticipating.

Basically, the bar elucidates the three 'states' in which you can use Google's services. First this is 'Unidentified,' which is where Google only knows your IP address, tracks you with a cookie, but doesn't know your name; then there's 'Psuedonymous,' which is how most of us currently use Google -- and finally there's 'Identified,' which is where your real life identity is assured.

Interestingly, Google also answers a question we've always wondered about: when you're logged out, you are effectively anonymous -- even if your IP address matches one of your Google accounts, your surfing habits are still kept separate.

The navigation bar, then, is simply a way of making sure you always know just how private (or public) your actions are. It's worth noting that the nav bar might still become a part of the upcoming '+1' social layer -- but for the time being, we can only guess at how they might be combined.

iPad 2 gets a Smart Cover

We can't say we were expecting to be impressed by a case for the new iPad 2, but Apple's pulled something of a surprise out its hat with its new Smart Covers for the tablet. Available in multiple colors and in your choice of polyurethane or leather variants, the covers attach to the iPad with a self-aligning magnetic hinge and can also be folded into a triangle and used as a stand. What's more, they'll automatically wake or put your iPad to sleep when you open or close the cover, and they even pack a microfiber lining that cleans your screen each time you flip it open. As Steve Jobs explained, Apple designed the covers right alongside the iPad itself and, as he pointed out in true sound bite fashion, "it's not a case -- it's a cover." Look for the poly covers to set you back $39, while the leather ones will run $69 apiece -- video is after the break.

Apple Announces 100 Million iPhones, 15 Million iPads Sold

Steve Jobs, on stage at the iPad 2 event today, announced that, among other things, Apple had sold 100 million iPhones. That's a hell of a lot. They also announced an official figure of 15 million iPads sold, which is about what estimates have been, and as Steve noted, "That's more than every tablet PC ever sold."

Firefox 4's best restartless add-ons

Unless you've been sleeping under a rock, or in a tent outside the Googleplex with an "I LOVE SCHMIDT" banner, you hopefully know that Firefox 4 supports restartless add-ons, or in developerese: bootstrapped extensions.

Unfortunately, however, the process of converting an existing add-on into a restartless wonder is far from simple. A few months ago, back when the Firefox 4 beta machine really got into the swing of things, the developer of the world's most popular add-on, Adblock Plus, described his laborious and infuriating attempt at making his add-on restartless -- and today, just a few days away from the final Firefox beta, there still isn't a single big-name restartless add-on to be found.

On the flip side, writing new restartless add-ons is a little easier. Uptake amongst developers still seems to be very slow, though. Add-ons for Firefox (AMO) only has about 80 add-ons tagged with 'restartless', and even less with the restartless add-on's SDK, 'jetpack'.

Then, of course, only a few of those add-ons are actually worth using! Read on for our pick of the best Firefox 4 restartless add-ons.

Hands-On With Vintcase, The iPad Case Gandalf Would Use

The Vintcase is a leather iPad case made in Spain. It is somewhat impractical, looks like a prop from Lord of the Rings, and it costs a wallet-lightening ?79 ($109). Yet despite all this, I can’t help but like it. Aesthetically, the case is almost the complete opposite of then iPad it envelops. Handmade in Ubrique, [...]

Shocker! UK regulator finds average broadband speeds are 'less than half' those advertised

You don't have to go to the lengths of compiling a statistical project to know that advertised and actual broadband speeds are two pretty disparate entities, but it does help. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, recently took a thorough look at 11 broadband packages, which collectively account for over 90 percent of all British broadband subscriptions, and found that actual download throughput was less than half (only 45 percent) of the advertised "up to" speed. The worst offenders were resellers of BT's ADSL lines, with Orange dipping below 3Mbit on its 8Mbit lines and TalkTalk occasionally offering only 7.5Mbit to users paying for a 24Mbit connection, while Virgin's cable connectivity won out by sticking most loyally to its listed rating. What Ofcom proposes for the future is that all these service providers start offering Typical Speed Ranges that more accurately reflect the bandwidth a potential subscriber would be buying into -- a proposal that might actually have some teeth as the British Advertising Standards Authority is currently in the midst of a review specifically concerned with broadband advertising practices. Transparency in the way we're sold broadband? That'd make a welcome change!

Facebook Acquires Group Messaging Service Beluga In A Talent AND Technology Deal

Facebook has just acquired group messaging service Beluga, we've learned. Here's what we know: Facebook has acquired both the product and the team, and the plan is apparently to keep the service open for now. With past acquisitions, Facebook has only acquired companies for their talent. But this time it's apparently a bit different, as they're interested in both the talent and the technology behind Beluga. It was barely two months ago that we first wrote about Beluga ? when I called it my "group messaging white whale". Since then I've been a non-stop user of the service and figured it would be one of the stand-out stars at SXSW this year. Today changes things a bit, obviously.
