Microsoft announces budget-friendly Lifecam HD-3000 webcam, Comfort and Express mice

Microsoft announces budget-friendly Lifecam HD-3000 webcam, Comfort and Express mice
Digging the 1080p LifeCam Studio but don't feel like spending $100? Or, maybe you don't need all those p's? Microsoft has, for you and you alone, announced the new LifeCam HD-3000. It tops out at 720p but retails for a more palatable $39.95. Also newly announced is a trio of mice, first and most exciting being the $19.95 Express Mouse (above) which, according to Microsoft, has both the looks and the moves. We're not really sure what that means, but it is kind of funky looking with the offset cord your choice of six colors ranging from "Hibiscus Red" to "Dahlia Pink." For those who'd rather stick with something less-flowery there's the Comfort Mouse 3000 for the same price, similar features in a design less likely to stand out in the conference room. Or, cough up another $10 for the $29.95 Comfort Mouse 6000, pictured below. It gives up ambidextrous pretenses in favor of a more form-fitting shape and five whole buttons. Can you handle that many buttons? Yeah, you totally can.

How to change a default application on Android

android
This week's tips series is all about Android, highlighting some the operating system's built-in utilities, and better ways of getting stuff done. For other technology tips, check our Tips index.

When you first try an alternative launcher or Web browser, Android asks if you'd like that application to be the default from now on. You may say yes and then come to regret it later on - perhaps you've decided you like another launcher better, or wish to go back to using the stock Android browser.

While you could always uninstall the application you no longer wish to be the default, that's a bit of a brute-force solution. Perhaps you still want it on your system, but only wish to use it every now and then.

To make an app stop being a "default application" for a certain type of action, do this:

1) Go to Settings > Applications > Manage applications.
2) Locate your application in the list. If the list is too long, you can hit the Running tab, because your app most likely is still running somewhere in the background.
3) Once you've located it, tap its name.
4) You will now find yourself in the Application info screen. Scroll down until you see the heading which says Launch by default.
5) Press the Clear defaults button, shown in the screenshot.

When you next try to perform the operation previously associated with this app (launch a browser, go to the home screen, etc.), you will be presented with a dialog letting you choose what app should be used. Presto!

Lacie?s Little Big Drive Shows Thunderbolt Is Great for Storage

Boom! As quick as a flash, Lacie has announced what is probably the first Thunderbolt-compatible hard drive to market. And when I say “to market”, I mean “to have a press release.” The drive is a version of Lacie’s Little Big Disk, the compact 7200rpm USB/FireWire/eSATA drive that is already pretty well-specced as it [...]

HTC Droid Incredible 2 shows up in Verizon's system

Well, look what we've got here! Seeing that HTC just introduced the Incredible S -- a world phone only available in the UK -- it was only a matter of time before the phone hit the stateside. A trusted tipster just hit us with screen shots of Verizon's internals containing a device dubbed HTC ADR6350. The other screenshot below has a listing for the HTC63503 with a description of "INCRD2." Putting two and two together, we'd say with great confidence that the Incredible 2 is coming to Verizon in the near future -- and we certainly wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with that "buttonless" shot we saw a while back. Stay tuned as we try and dig up more details... and in the meantime, peep the second screenshot after the break!

Lion Scopes Out Territory in Apple Ecosystem

Apple may be hoping that Mac operating system release number eight becomes the eighth wonder of the technological world. The company released a developers preview of the OS, code-named "Lion," on Thursday. However, Lion is primarily a "user interface evolution rather than a back-end functionality upgrade," according to Appitalism founder and CEO Simon Buckingham.

Paranormal Shark Activity is a hopping Time Waster

paranormalsharkactivity
The shark is a majestic creature; it's also pretty dangerous. When Paranormal Shark Activity starts off, you're just a dude hanging out on the pier. You quickly discover there's no way to go left (back to the city or the port, presumably) - there's only one choice, which is to keep going right, into the water.

Once you go into the water, the actual game starts. A huge (and I do mean huge) shark appears on the left side of the frame, and you have to keep jumping between crates and platforms floating on the water to try and keep ahead of the shark.

When you fall into the water between crates, you don't drown - you just float there, idling about as shark bait. Hitting SPACE makes you jump for the next platform.

Once you've gone for a short while, you will start picking up the occasional bomb along the way. Hitting UP will launch a bomb at the shark, which will then disappear for a few seconds.

When the shark reappears, it may do so from any side of the screen - so don't get to close too the right side!

Firefox 4 infographic from Mozilla taunts IE9

Not one to let it lie (yes, Asa, we're looking at you), Mozilla's Technical Evangelist, Paul Rouget, has produced a fancy infographic that details just how much ass Firefox 4 kicks in comparison to IE9. If you're in a hurry, here's the summary: FIREFOX RULES; IE9 SUX. For detailed analysis, read on.

For the most part Rouget relies in Firefox's pure, numerical superiority, rather than real-world use cases. Firefox 4 supports more of the HTML5 and CSS3 standards. Firefox implements almost the entire JavaScript API, as opposed to IE9's mediocre 48%. Firefox supports more Web technologies. To really drive it home, the infographic even shows how Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 are superior to Microsoft's latest offering.

Don't be mesmerized by the tawdry typography, though: with juicy propaganda it's always what isn't said that matters. There is no mention of IE9's hyperspeed JavaScript engine, Chakra. There's no mention of pinned tabs or per-process tabs or Tracking Protection Lists. It feels a bit like a scrawny, bespectacled geek throwing stones at a fat billionaire with three trophy wives -- the nerd is probably right, but the pimp doesn't really care.

There's no doubt that Firefox 4 implements a broader range of Web technologies -- and don't get us wrong, it is an excellent browser -- but more stuff doesn't necessarily equate to better stuff. You can do a lot more with a pick-up truck than a Ferrari, but choosing which one you want to drive isn't necessarily an easy decision

Calm Down, Apple Isn't Starting a Real Streaming Music Service [Apple]

For a long time now, many have speculated Apple might start their own "all you can eat" streaming music service to compete against the likes of Rdio, MOG and Rhapsody. But anonymous industry sources are telling the Financial Times that Apple has no plans to "cannibalize" their iTunes download service, and that the technology they acquired in their 2009 purchase of Lala will be used for "insurance."
