Chrome Web Store opens to international devs

The Chrome Web Store has had somewhat limited developer access since its launch back in December of 2010. Soon, however, international developers will be able to submit Web apps for sale in Google's open-but-closed Web marketplace. Fifteen additional countries have been added to the developer dashboard, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and the UK.

While international developer access is great, Chrome users in those countries aren't going to benefit from the expansion for some time. Google says the consumer launch isn't going to happen until later this year. Developers will also be able to price apps they want to sell via Chrome Web Store Payments (powered by Google Checkout), but won't actually be able to register for a merchant account yet.

Oh, what a tangled Web... Store!

PS3 Could Become a Harder Nut to Crack

Sony doesn't like it when gamers mess with its products. The company's stance against PS3 hacking -- users altering the machine's programming to make it perform functions other than playing games -- continues to grow stronger, as Sony pulls out the legal guns and shows no signs of backing down. When it comes to consumer electronics, unauthorized hacking and pirating seem like unavoidable hassles.

Visualized: the HTC keyboard slider family

Clockwise from the top left, that's the the Sprint Arrive, the likely-for-Verizon Merge, the Sprint Evo Shift 4G, and the T-Mobile G2. If we had to rate them, we'd say the Arrive has the best key feel, followed by the Merge, the Evo Shift, and finally the cramped G2 -- although the super cheap-feeling hinge on the Evo Shift knocks off several points. We'd also say the physical keys on the G2 feel better than the mushy keys on the Merge, but the G2's cramped layout doesn't do it any favors. In any event, picking one of these is a pretty great problem to have, don't you think?

BTDigg, the first DHT 'trackerless' decentralized torrent search engine

BTDigg DHT search
Despite DHT being included in major BitTorrent clients for years, the very first 'trackerless' torrent search engine has only just launched: BTDigg.

DHT is a decentralized and distributed technology that enables users to download files from nearby peers without contacting a central tracker. BTDigg crawls the massive DHT network, hopping from peer to peer, and slowly builds up an index of every torrent in existence -- in theory, anyway.

The exciting thing about BTDigg is that you now don't have to upload a torrent to a tracker or indexer to share something. BTDigg will eventually stumble across your shared files and index them. Of course, the irony is that BTDigg centralizes the decentralized DHT network, defeating any of its privacy and security benefits.

The main thing holding BTDigg back, though, is a truly atrocious interface and almost complete lack of functionality. It's green and orange, presumably in an attempt to look like old monochrome monitors. The search algorithm itself is awful -- and there's absolutely no way to refine your search, either. A search for "Glee EZTV" brought up a seemingly random and unchronological listing of episodes -- with lots of multiple results, too!

Still, it's a fun proof of concept. We're sure that future versions will be better...

Xtreamer Prodigy features AirPlay support, USB 3, and a GUI that will delight fans of Flash (and fans of GUIs)

Looks like the folks at Xtreamer have a few tricks up their sleeves! Following hot on the heels of the company's Ultra HTPC comes Xtreamer Prodigy, a Realtek 1185-based media player and streamer that sports USB 3.0 connectivity, 256MB RAM, 512MB NAND flash, HDMI, an integral IR remote control, a multi-card reader and a 3.5-inch HDD bay. But the real fun here (or so we've heard) is the Adobe Flash GUI, as well as support for such services as Apple AirPlay, Mediafly, Google Talk, Last FM, Pandora, Facebook, and more. The rumored price is €119, which will have to suffice until we find something more concrete (which should be about five days from now). Get a closer look below.

Farragomate is a social fridge magnet game where you make up sentences

farragomate
You know those fridge magnet kits composed of a whole bunch of words? The ones you put all over your fridge door and then try to arrange into all sorts of juvenile and/or amusing sentences. Well, Farragomate is the social, webby version of that very same pastime.

You get to play with a bunch of random strangers in real-time, and make up sentences out of a pre-set collection of words, including some fairly naughty ones, and all players' nicknames. As you can imagine, some of the results are not child-friendly.

There are ten rounds to a game. Once a round is done, players get to vote for their favorite sentence from that round. You can't vote for your own creation, of course. There's in-game chat, too.

I think the vocabulary could be made a bit more eclectic, but even as it is, it's a nice way to spend a few minutes and meet random strangers on the Internet (always a thrilling experience).

WordPress 3.1 released, features massive writing workflow and admin overhauls

WordPress 3.1 releasedWith over 2,000 code commits and 820 bug and feature fixes, WordPress 3.1 has been released. You can download the new version in its entirety, or simply log into your WordPress.org installation and update via the Dashboard.

The most notable new new change is a massively overhauled writing interface, which should make the entire publishing process both more streamlined and less intimidating for new users. Linking back to old posts and pages is now a lot easier, too (just click a button and start searching), and lots of rarely-used blocks have now been hidden by default (they can be re-enabled in Screen Options).

There's a new Admin Bar, which appears at the top of every page and makes moving around your blog's back end a whole lot easier. For power users and theme makers, there are now Post Formats, which significantly increase the flexibility of WordPress layouts.

For a complete list of the changes and new features, check the WordPress 3.1 Codex page.
