Android '2.4' Gingerbread will arrive in April, will support dual-core Honeycomb apps

No, that's not a typo: an update to Android 2.3 will arrive in April to allow single-core smartphones to run Honeycomb's dual-core apps. The news comes from hardware manufacturer Viewsonic, which insists the new version will be numbered 2.4 -- and it won't be called Ice Cream as expected; it will just be an updated version of Gingerbread.

Apparently the only change between 2.3 and 2.4 is the support for Honeycomb apps, which are designed to run with a dual-core processor -- and Android 2.3, as it stands, only supports single-core processors. Viewsonic is releasing a 'jumbo' smartphone with a 4.1" screen, which is why it understandably wants access to the Honeycomb library of tablet-oriented apps.

We're not sure why Google would break away from its now-famous versioning system. It's also odd that this news comes from a third party, and not Google itself. We wouldn't be surprised if this actually turns out to be version 2.3.3 or 2.3.4, rather than 2.4. The same source at Viewsonic also says that Ice Cream will be 3.1, and thus another tablet-oriented OS -- which would mean that the next smartphone version of Android could begin with 'J.'

Our money's on Jello.

Nokia Windows Phone will not support Qt, Symbian developers left high and dry

Following news of the Nokia-Microsoft strategic partnership, Nokia has sent a letter to its beleaguered developers to say that Qt will continue to be the development framework for its Symbian phones -- but as far as Nokia Windows Phone 7 devices go, Qt will not be supported. Silverlight and the XNA framework will be the only options for Nokia WP7 developers.

In the letter, Nokia says that it plans to sell 150 million more Symbian phones -- but presumably, after that, the transition to Windows Phone will be complete and Symbian will die a quiet and ignoble death. MeeGo, the open-source smartphone OS, will still make an appearance later this year -- and yes, it will run Qt apps.

While this doesn't come as a surprise -- porting Qt to WP7 would be a massive and time consuming undertaking -- we have to wonder what this will do to the already-runty Windows Phone 7 app ecosystem. Will Symbian Qt app developers embrace the new platform and learn an entirely new set of programming skills? Or will they jump ship to a stable platform that's proven to work, like iOS or Android?

With Windows Phone 7's complete dearth of features, will Nokia developers even want to write apps for the new Nokia-Microsoft platform?

Jetbus is a retro-tastic physics game, with a bus

jetbus
Once upon a time, there used to be a DOS game with a caveman and a human powered helicopter. The caveman would shuttle around the screen, madly trying to get customers to where they wanted to go.

Jetbus is not that game, but it's obviously inspired by it. You're driving a yellow school bus which has jets. I guess the jet engine takes quite a bit of space inside the bus, because you can only pick up one person at a time.

There are several doors on the screen, each with its own number. As you pick up a person, the status bar at the bottom of the screen shows you which number door you have to take them to.

You must fly your bus carefully, because if it gets bumped around too much, you lose. You earn money on each level, and can visit the garage to buy better jets and damping, power-ups, or even a whole new vehicle.

So while this game isn't made as well as the original that inspired it, it does provide a few minutes of fun. And now, which one of you guys remembers the original and feels like pointing to it in the comments?

DoD Talks Up Plans to Deploy Cybercommandos

The United States will leverage IT know-how among members of the National Guard and the nation's military reserves by increasing the number of units that have dedicated cybermissions, U.S. Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn announced Tuesday. Government efforts alone can't fend off cyberattackers, and stronger cooperation with the private sector is crucial, said Lynn.
