WinZip releases new System Utilities Suite, we go hands-on

winzipsystemutilitiessuite
Most people know WinZip as a company that simply makes compression products; and up until today that has been true. But as more and more people use the built-in file compression utilities in Windows, WinZip has decided to expand into unexplored territory, at least for the company. Today they've introduced a new product called System Utilities Suite.

It's a suite composed of about a bajillion different tools (actually eighteen, but that's still a pretty high number). Note that these are really separate tools, not just menu options within one big tool. Each has its own UI, its own Start Menu entry, etc.

Part of WinZip's appeal is that many novice users know them; it's a very familiar brand, and people are likely to trust a system optimization tool that comes from a company they've known for years. But eighteen different tools many seem a tad complex for the average user, so indeed, there is one 'master utility,' which I spent some time with and recorded my initial impressions.

This utility doesn't encompass all other functionality, but it leads the user through a three-click process that optimizes many different aspects of the system. The idea is that this would be the first thing new users would run, and once that's done, they could use each of the other tools as needed (or according to their comfort level) to optimize specific aspects of their Windows PC.

Just to give you an idea, one of the purpose-specific tools is 'Game Optimizer,' which is a full-fledged VM running your game as its single application, with support for custom keymaps and other goodies. There's also a 'PC Fixer' and many other utilities in the suite.

You can watch me taking my first steps with System Utilities after the jump.

Note: We're going to be running a 10-license giveaway of WinZip System Utilities later on today, so keep your eyes peeled and your RSS reader open!

How a Dead Elephant Is Consumed In Under Two Minutes [Video]

This is a time lapse of what happens when you leave a dead elephant on the savanna. Yes, it's like the Lion King, but really gross. Don't play it if you don't want to see leopards, hyenas and flies putting all those proteins and carbohydrates back into the ecosystem. More »
