Balls in Space is an addictive retro platformer -- Time-Waster

ballsinspace
Let me start of by saying there's nothing NSFW about Balls in Space; I mean, not that playing any Flash game is very "safe for work", but Balls in Space isn't NSFW in that way, if you know what I mean (hint hint, nudge nudge, say no more!).

Now that we've got that out of the way, let me tell you about the game: You're a ball. On your own, you can run and jump, and that's about it. But as with good platformers, power-ups abound. Specifically, you collect little balls along the way which you can shoot out at the baddies. The balls don't go in a straight line - they're subject to gravity, and they bounce off walls and barriers.

Another handy power-up is the Ninja, which lets you execute double-jumps. With these (and perhaps a couple of others which I have yet to uncover) you basically need go through the levels, kill the baddies, and get to the door every time. A few minutes into the game you'll find a nice homage to the Mario franchise, too. Quite a fun little game!

Is Apple Finally Releasing an iPhone Nano?

Apple might be preparing a smaller, less-expensive version of the iPhone for release this year, according to multiple media outlets. The smaller iPhone could be half the size of a normal iPhone, and it may have a strong focus on internet-streamed media and “cloud” storage, according to The Wall Street Journal. Bloomberg followed up with a report [...]

Pentagon Red Tape Delayed Iraq?s Life-Saving Laser Weapons [Lasers]

Military bureaucrats needlessly blocked U.S. troops in Iraq from getting laser weapons - tools that could've kept civilians from getting killed. That, in a nutshell, is what the Pentagon's Inspector General concluded after an investigation of the Marine Corps' botched attempts to send the nonlethal lasers to the war zone. More »

Firefox 4 beta 11 released, more bugs stomped, beta 12 still to come

While the main Firefox beta website has not yet been updated, Firefox 4 beta 11 is now ready to be downloaded from Mozilla's FTP site. [en-US build / en-GB build]

As far as we're aware, this is just another milestone on the way to the release candidate; in other words, it's a bug-stomp release, so it'll be both faster and more stable than beta 10. If you're still holding off because of its beta moniker -- stop it! Download it! Try it out! You may even prefer it to Chrome (really).

Incidentally, there are no release notes for this build yet -- but we'll update this post when Mozilla provides some.

Android 2.3.3 brings expanded NFC features

With the Gingerbread barely cooled on the Android 2.3 SDK, Google has now pushed another iteration to developers. In Android 2.3.3, it's all about expanding support for near-field communications -- that non-Packers NFC business we've been hearing so much about.

In Android 2.3.3, Google has added a full-featured NFC read and write API, which will work with "almost any standard NFC tag in use today." They're also providing developers with better control over how their apps react when an NFC tag comes into range.

Last but not least, similar to the Touchstone transfer wizardry shown off by HP on its new line of webOS hardware today, Android 2.3.3 has initial support for peer-to-peer connections with "other NFC devices."

Google obviously wants to get some momentum behind Android's NFC support, not least because the company is likely working on an NFC-driven payment system.

Let the proximity application awesomeness begin!

FlightTrack wallpaper, FlightBoard app help make travel look cool

Youtube video for mobile viewing

I've raved about Mobiata's FlightTrack app before, and for good reasons -- it's just about the best at helping me keep track of where in the world I'm going. And it's just gotten better in a couple of big ways.

First is with the addition of a live wallpaper that shows flights in progress. If you're a travel nerd, airplane buff or just like shiny things, you'll want to check it out.

Then there's the recently released FlightBoard. Previously available for iOS, it does what the name suggests -- it's a slick way to see what flights are coming up when.

We caught up with Mobiata for a quick demo at the Android booth at Mobile World Congress. Check it out.

HTC Flyer vs. Galaxy Tab vs. iPad... fight!

In a world of 10-inch dual-core Androids, HTC has opted to tread its own path by cranking up processor speeds, sticking to a 7-inch form factor and eschewing the latest Honeycomb build for a Gingerbread version it could customize more comprehensively with Sense. All that's well and good, but sometimes all it comes down to is how these gadgets look and feel. So to help you wrap your mind around the Flyer's new aluminum body, we present a couple of comparison galleries with it set against two devices that need no introduction. Get clicking!
