Square Turns Two And Celebrates With A Massive Times Square Billboard

Jack Dorsey?s mobile payments startup Square is celebrating its second birthday today and also embarking on a massive marketing push?a Times Square billboard in New York City. The massive, multi-angle, multi-panel billboard shows how easy it is to use Square on an iPhone, with the tagline "Now everyone can accept credit cards." We're told that Square didn't pay for the billboard but that it was funded by "generous supporter." This has been a big week for the company. Square just teamed up with designer Vivienne Tam to launch a limited edition, branded Square credit card reader.

Use a virtual private server to BitTorrent faster and more efficiently

This week's series of tips is all about downloading files via BitTorrent. We'll highlight ways in which to torrent more efficiently, obtain higher download speeds, and generally make the whole process easier. For more tech tips, check our Tips index.

In almost every case, your download speed on a torrent is dictated by your upload speed. If you manage to download a few chunks, and then upload those at high speed, you will very soon find your pipe very full indeed.

Now, if you're lucky enough to have a juicy upload connection at home (a few megabits), you probably have no problem filling your entire downstream bandwidth. If you're stuck with a weak DSL connection, however, a virtual private server (VPS), or 'seedbox', is what you need.

A VPS [Google search link] can cost as little as a few dollars a month, and for that you get access to 100Mbps both upstream and down. 350 megabyte torrents will complete in just a few seconds, and in general you'll get more bandwidth than you'll ever need (100GB or more). Once your torrents are complete on your VPS, you can download to your home computer at full speed. This also leaves your home's upstream bandwidth free for other uses, like surfing the Web!

Most VPSes run Linux, though, so you will need to learn how to use a console torrent client like rTorrent -- but that's tomorrow's tip!

Mubarak Shut Down The Internet, And The Internet Paid Him In Kind

Yesterday, after 17 days of protests, former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak gave a speech to the Egyptian government that made it seem like he would not be stepping down. This led to many people on the ground in Egypt and elsewhere feeling depressed, a series of humorous jokes being bandied back and forth on Facebook and Twitter and one Twitter employee commenting to me,"Well, we can only do so much." It has become fashionable amongst Western media and armchair foreign policy experts (hi Malcolm) to dismiss the idea that what happened in Egypt was a digital revolution mainly because most people associate Facebook and Twitter with the mundane over-sharing of what you ate for breakfast. That and the fact that its been pretty damn hard to pin down what exactly causes revolutions. This belief  isn't helped by the truth that a ton of social media noise did not actually lead to a regime change in Iran during #IranElection.

AT&T handing over 1000 free rollover minutes to all of its customers

Well, would you look at that. A day after the Verizon iPhone goes on sale to the general public, AT&T is dishing out 1000 free rollover minutes to all of its customers. The catch? None that we know of -- the wireless company apparently just wants to thank all of its awesome customers for, you know, not making the switch to some other carrier with Apple's smartphone. Simply text "yes" to 11113020 to be awarded the talk tokens -- which will probably just pile up on top of the thousands you've undoubtedly already accumulated. Too bad they can't prevent dropped calls.

[Thanks, Danielle]

Npacked software install manager is like Synaptic for Windows

One thing I've always preferred about Linux over Windows is the fact that just about every big-name distro includes a slick, easy-to-use package manager that makes installing and updating software a simple procedure. If you're using Windows, you need to know where to go to download apps -- in Linux, you just need to fire up your package manager and browse or search.

We've looked at a few Windows apps before which try to bring package management to Windows, but they all pale in comparison to Npacked. Install Npacked, browse for apps, and click your choices to install them -- there's also a built-in search tool which finds apps nearly instantly. Npacked downloads your programs and installs them in the background without requiring you to click a single next button. Better still, any apps you install via Npacked can be updated just as easily.

So what apps does Npacked support? The short version is "just about every must-have free Windows app we've ever blogged about." Apps include 7-Zip, Dropbox, VLC, uTorrent, Handbrake, CCleaner, OpenOffice, Greenshot, Everything, and even iTunes. Antivirus options are a bit lagging at the moment, with only AVG and ClamWin offered.

We'd like to see a few things added besides more security software. For starters, multiple selections would be very handy, and it would be helpful if some descriptive text about the apps or a screenshot was displayed. We'd also like to be able to export a list of installed programs, or some kind of cloud integration -- to make reinstallation on a new system a snap. Even without these features, Npacked is one of the slickest ways we've seen to find and installed new apps on Windows.

HP Veer too small for 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB port, gets magnetic connectors instead

Ah, fiddlesticks! It was bound to happen sooner or later with phones becoming increasingly anorexic, but we can't say that HP's solution to not having room for a 3.5mm headphone jack or a microUSB port is... um, awesome. Just as consumers had their voices heard when HTC decided to require an ExtUSB adapter to use standard headphones with the T-Mobile G1, we're guessing that quite a few potential Veer buyers will be soured by the idea of carrying around yet another dongle just to have access to a very basic port. After all, what's the point in toting around the world's smallest webOS device if you're also forced to lug around one (or two) of the world's most annoying adapters? According to Pre Central, the Veer will ship with a pair of these clips -- one of 'em provides a custom USB port for charging, while the other adds a headphone jack. Of course, Bluetooth listeners needn't worry over the latter, but those who'd rather not mess with a Touchstone will need to be extra cautious when it comes to packing your charging cable and USB nub. We'd obviously prefer the oxygen we breathe to simply recharge our gizmos in a feat of perpetual engineering, but till then, it looks like Veer owners will be tied tight to at least a couple of accessories.

Intel to start shipping remedied Cougar Point chipsets on February 14th

Well, it looks like Intel's $700 million problem with its Series 6 Cougar Point chipsets is now one step closer to a resolution -- the company has just announced that the fully remedied B3 revision of the chipset will start shipping out on February 14th. That will bring with it an updated BIOS, full pin compatibility with the previous B2 chipset and, most importantly, a "minor metal layer change" that promises to improve "lifetime wear out with no changes to functionality or design specifications" -- in other words, a fix for that rogue transistor affecting SATA ports. Hit up the source link below for Intel's official notice (in PDF form).
