And Motorola Xoom contest winner is

Motorola Xoom

Congrats go out to James Buckey of Ohio, the winner of the Motorola Xoom tablet from Android Central and Wyse Technology.  With almost 2,000 entries to go through, the folks at Wyse Technology have picked James' winning post describing how Pocket Cloud helps him do what he needs to do better.

"I currently am the IT director at a K12 district in southeastern ohio. The combination of the Xooms hardware with Honeycomb and Wyse's Pockecloud would have a tremendous impact on the currently daunting task of managing 750+ Windows clients. Even with a notebook, trying to keep mobile is difficult with an average battery life of 2 hours. Potentially with Pocketcloud, I could manage a great percentage of these users while not worrying about finding an outlet. On the merits Pocketcloud alone, I would gain the ability to manage tasks ranging from simple user assistance to extremely mobile virus removal and perhaps interacting with an interactive whiteboard without the use of another unneeded proprietary wireless slate. In short, my dream of effective and simple remote management of my constituents may be one step closer to reality."

Congratulations and best wishes go out to you James, and enjoy your new Motorola Xoom!

The Verizon iPhone's Silent Explosion

Just after the Verizon iPhone went on pre-order last week, the carrier boasted record-setting numbers of sales. Some estimates pegged the number at half a million units in only a few hours. When the actual phones made it to stores on Thursday, though, most places didn't see the kind of blocks-long lines that form at Apple and AT&T stores each time a brand-new model rolls out. So was the launch a big downer?

Insidia is a dark-yet-forgiving platformer -- Time Waster

insidia
So you're an alien, tooling around in free space in your little spaceship... when suddenly, disaster strikes! Your craft is hit by a meteor, and you're forced to crash-land on an unfamiliar, dark planet.

That's where Insidia starts off. Now that you're on the planet, you have to navigate its complex maze of rooms and corridors in search of repair kits for your craft. Once you find all ten repair kits, you'd be able to leave the planet (and win the game).

Unlike many other platformers, Insidia is not linear. As you progress through the game, you reveal more and more passages and rooms, but you also go through some places more than once. When you hit M you get a nice map that shows everywhere you've been so far and gives you a sense of how much is still to be explored.

As you walk around, you find items that improve your abilities (a double-jump power-up, for example). And when something kills you, you just respawn at the last "save point", with all of your items and abilities intact. I love that, because it means dying is not a big deal - it's just a part of the game, and it doesn't make you feel like you're failing.

All in all, this is a platformer I could certainly spend some time with.

Malicious Software Removal Tool now cleans Cycobot infections

You may have noticed Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool in your list of available Windows Updates. Heck, you may even have seen it in your Add/Remove Programs and wondered where it came from. The MSRT can actually be quite useful, and it's a fast, simple way to remove a number of common malware infections.

In an update pushed yesterday, Microsoft added Cycobot to the list of malware that MSRT can remove. It's a nasty little backdoor Trojan, and one I've seen on plenty of the systems I spend my days repairing. The full list of malware (more than 120 types) which the tool can remove is available on this page.

MSRT is a good little tool to add to your security arsenal, but a multi-app attack is always best. Make sure you've got a good antivirus program installed, and keep Malwarebytes handy just in case.

(inbefore 'Does it remove Windows?', Linux users... )

Nokia posts video of Microsoft partnership announcement online

Wow, we have to hand it those Nokia social media types, they're on top of their game. A mere couple of hours after Stephen Elop and Steve Ballmer took the stage in London, the video of their joint announcement of a Nokia-Microsoft partnership is up and ready for repeated consumption. For those of you just catching up now, Windows Phone 7 has become Nokia's "principal smartphone strategy," MeeGo is getting transformed into an experimental "learning" platform, and Symbian... well, maybe you should sit down for this one, Symbian's being killed off. There's more to the strategic alliance unveiled today, including the WP7 Marketplace subsuming the Ovi Store and some Bing and Ovi Maps interaction, so why not press play above and let the men in charge tell you about it?

Winamp sneak peek: Android app to bring UI updates, voice and genre search

Nullsoft, now with over 250,000 Winamp for Android downloads under its belt, is gearing up for a new release in March, and we've been lucky enough to get our hands on an early alpha build. You may want to leap straight into the gallery to look at the updated UI -- but if not, read on! [Disclaimer: Nullsoft and Download Squad are both owned by AOL.]

The most obvious change is a completely-overhauled UI. The home screen features bigger buttons, and the Search button has been replaced with Genre -- yes, you can now search and browse by genre -- and everything looks slightly darker, slicker and cooler.

The Now Playing screen has been updated to match the home screen's aesthetic. The UI is tighter, tidier, but a little bit 'Web 2.0' if we're brutally honest. Now Playing also features left- and right-swipe gestures to go back and forward through an album or playlist. Hopefully we'll see even more gestures added in later versions, like double tapping to pause and swiping up to return to your playlist.

HP confirms legacy webOS apps will run on webOS 3.0, TouchPad keeps its Mojo

HP confirms legacy webOS apps will be runnable on webOS 3.0, TouchPad keeps its Mojo
We know the original Palm Pre models and Pixi won't get upgraded to webOS 2.0, and we also know all about the new Enyo app development framework. But what about running those apps written in the older Mojo framework on webOS 3.0 devices, like the TouchPad? They'll be supported, so says HP Developer Relations and Framework Engineer Ben Combee. A first tweet indicated that "On webOS 3, Mojo apps will run in an emulation window with back and forward buttons at bottom." He went on to say this won't be a traditional emulator in the "check out my Super Metroid ROM, yo" sense, rather "a smaller card with gesture area chrome." So, good news for existing apps continuing to be supported going forward, but of course it remains to be seen what the experience will look and feel like. It seems we'll have to wait a bit to find that out.
