Nokia: Symbian and MeeGo not dead yet, still shipping this year (updated)

Amazing day, eh? Something many of us thought would never happen just hit the smartphone industry like a sweaty madman screaming at developers. But rest easy, even though Windows Phone 7 is being billed as Nokia's "primary smartphone platform," your OS hasn't suffered an untimely death, MeeGo and Symbian fans. Understandably, we're seeing that Alberto Torres, the former head of MeeGo, quit as of yesterday. Here's what Nokia has in store for MeeGo:
"Under the new strategy, MeeGo becomes an open-source, mobile operating system project. MeeGo will place increased emphasis on longer-term market exploration of next-generation devices, platforms and user experiences. Nokia still plans to ship a MeeGo-related product later this year."
Likewise, Symbian isn't going away either:
"With Nokia's planned move to Windows Phone as its primary smartphone platform, Symbian becomes a franchise platform, leveraging previous investments to harvest additional value. This strategy recognizes the opportunity to retain and transition the installed base of 200 million Symbian owners. Nokia expects to sell approximately 150 million more Symbian devices in the years to come"
Jo Harlow, Nokia exec now in charge of Smart Devices, will grab the MeeGo reins in addition to responsibility for Symbian Smartphones and Strategic Business Operations.

Update: After listening to the Q&A and further presentations, it's clear that Symbian is on its last legs and will be replaced by Windows Phone just as soon as Nokia and Microsoft can make it happen. Commitment to MeeGo has also softened with Elop calling it "an opportunity for learning."

A Small Car is a frustrating 3D Flash Time-Waster

asmallcar
It's not often that I see 3D attempted in Flash, and to be honest, after playing A Small Car I can see why.

It's not that it's not a fun game - otherwise I wouldn't mention it as a potential Time Waster. It's just very frustrating. Your job is to steer a car over a complex course, hanging in mid-air, to the checkered "landing zone" at the end of each level. You sometimes need to jump, too - so that means you can't always drive super-slow. The tracks are quite short, and it's all keyboard driven -- you don't need to use the mouse for anything.

As an experiment in 3D Flash content, it is quite impressive. The graphics are very blocky, but the motion is smooth. You can even change cameras by pressing C if you want to see what the track looks like from the driver's seat.

It's a fun game, but only if you've got plenty of patience.

eHarmony hacked, usernames and emails stolen

eHarmony, the massive online dating site whose late-night TV ads you just can't avoid, has unwittingly given away something much more significant that another weekend of free communication for singles. As reported by security watchdog Brian Krebs, eHarmony has been hacked.

The worst part: Krebs and another researcher alerted eHarmony administrators about the flaws which allowed the hack to happen last year. The eHarmony heist was reportedly pulled off by the same Argentinian cybercriminal who broke into another dating site -- PlentyOfFish -- and held its data for ransom. He and his associates were also responsible for breaching Pirate Bay not too long ago.

Data obtained from eHarmony included usernames, email addresses, and password hashes. Administrators traced the attack to an SQL injection vulnerability, which they now say has been patched. eHarmony's network infrastructure was not compromised, Krebs was told. As you can see, a mass password reset was also performed.

So what happened to the stolen eHarmony data? It was put up for sale for a couple thousand dollars, and it's highly likely that the email addresses have now been passed along to a spam syndicate. You may be getting a lot more than password reset emails in the coming weeks, eHarmony users.

In A Step Back Towards V3, Digg Ending RSS Submissions For Publishers

In a step back towards the old Digg, Digg Product manager Mike Cieri just sent out an email to partner publishers stating the intent to remove the RSS submitted stories feature. For those of you that remember, the RSS submission feature was how stories from the Reddit publisher account on Digg were sent to the Digg front page in an act of rebellion against the V4 redesign of the site last August. The painful V4 redesign led to a user revolt and a drastic drop in traffic, with a corresponding increase in traffic over at competitor Reddit.

AT&T Will Make Mobile Broadband Cheaper for Laptops [Rumor]

According to Boy Genius, AT&T is getting ready to adjust pricing on their LaptopConnect data plans, which includes hotspots, 3G dongles and 3G-enabled laptops. Instead of $30 for 200MB of data and $60 for 5GB of data, they would potentially sell you 3GB for $30 and $5GB for $50. [BGR] More »

HP Veer too small for 3.5mm headphone jack and microUSB port, gets magnetic connectors instead

Ah, fiddlesticks! It was bound to happen sooner or later with phones becoming increasingly anorexic, but we can't say that HP's solution to not having room for a 3.5mm headphone jack or a microUSB port is... um, awesome. Just as consumers had their voices heard when HTC decided to require an ExtUSB adapter to use standard headphones with the T-Mobile G1, we're guessing that quite a few potential Veer buyers will be soured by the idea of carrying around yet another dongle just to have access to a very basic port. After all, what's the point in toting around the world's smallest webOS device if you're also forced to lug around one (or two) of the world's most annoying adapters? According to Pre Central, the Veer will ship with a pair of these clips -- one of 'em provides a microUSB port for charging, while the other adds a headphone jack. Of course, Bluetooth listeners needn't worry over the latter, but those who'd rather not mess with a Touchstone will need to be extra cautious when it comes to packing your charging cable and microUSB nub. We'd obviously prefer the oxygen we breathe to simply recharge our gizmos in a feat of perpetual engineering, but till then, it looks like Veer owners will be tied tight to at least a couple of accessories.

The Internet Scores Its Second Victory Of The Day, Borders Nears Bankruptcy

A while back a Seeing Interactive post entitled "You've Got Mail Is Ripe For A Sequel" went popular on Hacker News. In You've Got Mail the movie, which is a bit of a joke around TC HQ because of its ties to Aol, The Shop Around The Corner, a small bookstore run by Meg Ryan goes out of business because Fox Books, a huge Borders-type book store run by Tom Hanks, opens up around the corner. The "Is Ripe For A Sequel" post pointed out how differently that scenario would have played out. Twelve years later,  Borders, affected by online book sales and sales of competing e-readers, is heading into a tailspin.
