Sports Illustrated Android apps (phone and tablet) now available

Sports Illustrated Android app

Sports Illustrated has launched its official Android applications in the Android Market. Available for phones and tablets with Android 2.1 and above, the sports news magazine published by Time Inc. has a trio of pricing plans:

  • Print/Digital (Samsung Galaxy/Android Smartphone/Web): $48 annually or $4.99/month
  • Digital Only: $3.99/month
  • Current print subscribers have free access to the digital package throughout the remainder of their term

We took a look recently at the tablet version of Sports Illustrated (Market link) on the Motorola Xoom, and it was pretty darn striking. (Check out the video after the break.) It's the same principal on the phone. You download the edition, and get all the content -- and then some -- right there on your phone. Download links are after the break. [Time Inc.]

LG Optimus 3D previewed in remarkably convincing teaser video

We just saw a brief teaser video for the LG Optimus 3D a few days ago, but another, longer one has now also surfaced that shows just how much the phone's glasses-free 3D display can help you in everyday situations -- like practicing yoga. As explained by LG, some things are simply too complicated to be conveyed by a two-dimensional medium like a big screen TV, and can only truly be grasped by holding a phone and looking at a 4.3-inch screen while standing on one leg. See for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, M.]

Windows Phone 7 Mango update to include Internet Explorer 9 Mobile

Back in December, we learned that the second update to Windows Phone 7 -- codenamed Mango -- would be adding HTML5 and Silverlight support. Mary Jo Foley's sources have now confirmed to her that Mango's improved HTML5 support will be due to the arrival of Internet Explorer 9 Mobile (or IE mobile 9 or mobile IE9, whatever Microsoft ultimately labels the browser). Silverlight, on the other hand, looks like it's been canned. Microsoft continues to push Silverlight as a development tool for WP7, but it looks like it will continue to downplay its role as a cross-platform runtime.

No date has been announced for the Mango update, but perhaps Microsoft will shed some light on the subject at Mobile Web Congress next week.

Linpus Lite tablet-optimized Linux OS gets hands-on treatment (video)

While tablet hardware is capable of running a full desktop OS, the experience often leaves something to be desired. Most desktop OSes are still designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse, and you're not likely to attach either to a tablet while you're riding a bus to work.

Linpus offered a full Linux distro for quite some time, and now they're offering a tablet-optimized interface for MeeGo. Carrypad scored some time with the slate-friendly Linpus Lite, and we've posted the video after the break. The new release offers full multitouch support, slick-looking media player and e-book reader apps, as well as media sharing and video chat features. Linpus Lite will be on display at Mobile World Congress soon, so our man Vlad may have additional insights to offer next week.

Greenpois0n untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 released

The Chronic Dev Team has unleashed the the untethered greenpois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1, which means you don't have to re-root your phone after every reboot.

Some provisos, though: the jailbreak is only available for Mac users right now, and the greenpois0n website seems to be down, so you can't actually download the jailbreak. Also, according to the excited Engadget commenters, it sounds like the installation of the jailbreak is a little bit finicky.

As always, back up your phone beforehand, and don't proceed unless you really know what you're doing.

Why Neil Gaiman Embraced Online Piracy [Video]

Neil Gaiman is a convert. Where finding his work on the internet years ago would send him into a tizzy, he's since come to accept—even appreciate—that broader distribution has meant a broader audience, and a broader audience has meant more sales. More »

Switching to Mac? There's an app for that

For a limited time only, you can get your hands on Learn the Switch to Mac for just $0.99 -- from the Mac App Store, of course. The app is designed for simpleton Windows types that lack the requisite cranial capacity to understand the Macintosh's complex and mysterious user interface.

Learn the Switch to Mac is basically a series of screencast video tutorials that walk you through each of Mac OS X's features, from using Finder and iChat, through to setting up Time Machine and manipulating Spaces. You are guided by the disembodied head of Saied, your personal instructor, who for some reason isn't wearing a Jobsian black sweater. To aid with the switching, Saied first focuses on the similarities and differences between Windows and Mac, and then pushes on with Mac-specific features.

For the sheer number of video tutorials that the app includes, it's surely worth 99 cents. Whether you're a new Macite looking for enlightenment, or you're holding the hand of a new convert, just buy it -- what've you got to lose?

Incidentally, according to TUAW, the price will eventually rise to $24.95, though there's no details of when the increase will actually occur. There's a video of Learn the Switch to Mac after the break.

Nokia posts video of Microsoft partnership announcement online

Wow, we have to hand it those Nokia social media types, they're on top of their game. A mere couple of hours after Stephen Elop and Steve Ballmer took the stage in London, the video of their joint announcement of a Nokia-Microsoft partnership is up and ready for repeated consumption. For those of you just catching up now, Windows Phone 7 has become Nokia's "principal smartphone strategy," MeeGo is getting transformed into an experimental "learning" platform, and Symbian... well, maybe you should sit down for this one, Symbian's being killed off. There's more to the strategic alliance unveiled today, including the WP7 Marketplace subsuming the Ovi Store and some Bing and Ovi Maps interaction, so why not press play above and let the men in charge tell you about it?
