How to start, stop and search for torrents on the move

This week's series of tips is all about downloading files via BitTorrent. We'll highlight ways in which to torrent more efficiently, obtain higher download speeds, and generally make the whole process easier. For more tech tips, check our Tips index.

Did you know that almost every BitTorrent client has an API that allows Web-based control panels and smartphone apps to directly tap into your torrents? Have you ever seen a poster or billboard for something shiny, and felt suddenly compelled to download something?

Before we get started, make sure you have access to your Internet router. You will need to set up some port forwarding -- and if you don't know how to do that, check PcWinTech for a guide, or type your router's name into Google. For uTorrent, you will need to forward port 8080; Transmission uses 9091.

Now, find a combination that matches your needs:

If you're an Android user, Transdroid is truly fantastic. Not only does it let you stop and start torrents that are running on your desktop PC at home, but you can also search for new torrents and add them to your download queue. The Web interfaces are pretty good too, iPhone users, so don't despair!

Finally, it's worth noting that the console-based Linux client rTorrent will also connect to Transdroid, and it has a Web interface.

3net 24/7 3D channel launches this weekend, but only on DirecTV

The number of 24/7 broadcasting 3D channels in the US will go from one to three next week, now that Sony, Imax and Discovery have announced the launch of their channel, 3net, on DirecTV alongside its existing n3D channel and ESPN 3D, which will start looping its sports videos 24/7 on Valentine's Day. Scheduled to go live at 8 p.m. Sunday night on channel 107 it promises fresh debuts all month with a new show added to the rotation every night at 9 p.m. It's big promise is to "offer viewers the largest library of native 3D entertainment content in the world by the end of 2011" although any 3D TV owners who don't have DirecTV would probably just be glad if it got added to their channel lineups anytime soon, check the press release after the break for all the details.

Obama Digs In for Nationwide Wireless Push

It was deja vu for President Barack Obama and the FCC, as both unveiled broad plans this week to expand broadband access. Obama revisited an idea he presented last June with the launch on Thursday of his Wireless Innovation and Infrastructure Initiative. Although White House officials spun the plan as "unveiled" and "new," it mirrors the 2010 proposal.

SHIFT: Freedom! is a fun, intelligent platformer -- Time Waster

shiftfreedom
Creating a good casual game is not a simple task: On the one hand, people want to "get" the game instantly, and just start playing without having to read lengthy tutorials or figure out complex controls. On the other hand, you don't want the game to be too one-dimensional.

And really, the first thing I noticed about SHIFT: Freedom! is that learning how to play was fun. The built-in tutorial walks you through a couple of levels, but you still have to think a little bit, and it's very fast.

As you might have gathered from the title, this is one platformer that doesn't emphasize crazy speed and agility. It's more cerebral - you have to figure your way out of every level using just what you see on the screen (no extra "tools" or anything like that).

It's a lot of fun to play, and due to the way it "teaches" you, you keep finding out new things you can do during the first few levels. And by the time you're done with those, you might just be hooked!

Researchers steal iPhone passwords in six minutes (video)

Losing your smarpthone is bad enough. But if you lose your iPhone and don't issue a remote wipe command (available for free with the Find My iPhone app) then you could find yourself in a world of hurt. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute Secure Information Technology (Fraunhofer SIT) can jailbreak and decrypt passwords from the iPhone's keychain -- for say, your Gmail account, corporate VPN, home WiFi, and MS Exchange -- in about six minutes using existing, known exploits. Sorry kids, your flimsy lockscreen passcode won't help. Video proof, after the break.

Microsoft releases Google Chrome extension to enable H.264 HTML5 video

Google has already announced that it would be dropping H.264 support from Chrome, but some other key players in the browser arena aren't backing down. Microsoft, of course, is standing behind MPEG-LA's codec -- and now it's making sure that Chrome users will still be able to view HTML5 video embeds which are encoded with it. The magic will be handled by a new browser add-on called Windows Media Player Extension for HTML5. No, it's not a full-on plug-in -- which is kind of what we were expecting, given Microsoft's affinity for NPAPI tomfoolery.

To add the extension to your Google Chrome install, just visit Microsoft's download page and agree to the alert you see above.
