Switching to Mac? There's an app for that

For a limited time only, you can get your hands on Learn the Switch to Mac for just $0.99 -- from the Mac App Store, of course. The app is designed for simpleton Windows types that lack the requisite cranial capacity to understand the Macintosh's complex and mysterious user interface.

Learn the Switch to Mac is basically a series of screencast video tutorials that walk you through each of Mac OS X's features, from using Finder and iChat, through to setting up Time Machine and manipulating Spaces. You are guided by the disembodied head of Saied, your personal instructor, who for some reason isn't wearing a Jobsian black sweater. To aid with the switching, Saied first focuses on the similarities and differences between Windows and Mac, and then pushes on with Mac-specific features.

For the sheer number of video tutorials that the app includes, it's surely worth 99 cents. Whether you're a new Macite looking for enlightenment, or you're holding the hand of a new convert, just buy it -- what've you got to lose?

Incidentally, according to TUAW, the price will eventually rise to $24.95, though there's no details of when the increase will actually occur. There's a video of Learn the Switch to Mac after the break.

Linpus Lite tablet-optimized Linux OS gets hands-on treatment (video)

While tablet hardware is capable of running a full desktop OS, the experience often leaves something to be desired. Most desktop OSes are still designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse, and you're not likely to attach either to a tablet while you're riding a bus to work.

Linpus offered a full Linux distro for quite some time, and now they're offering a tablet-optimized interface for MeeGo. Carrypad scored some time with the slate-friendly Linpus Lite, and we've posted the video after the break. The new release offers full multitouch support, slick-looking media player and e-book reader apps, as well as media sharing and video chat features. Linpus Lite will be on display at Mobile World Congress soon, so our man Vlad may have additional insights to offer next week.

EB01 Froyo for the Verizon Fascinate leaked, rooted and ready to try

Verizon Fascinate EB01 update

No announcements have been made, and no dates have been confirmed, but it appears that owners (points to self) of Verizon's Samsung Fascinate may soon (finally!) get their share of Froyo.

Just last week a leaked version, dubbed DL30, made the rounds, and we wasted no time in helping you join in on the fun. Alas, a week is an eternity in the world of Android, and an anonymous source slipped us a new build, dubbed EB01.

I got to put this build through its paces and see how well it performs and stacks up in terms of benchmark scores. A few highlights:

  • All the things you'd expect from Froyo including installation of apps on the Fascinates SD card; the latest Gtalk and Gmail apps; and full Adobe flash.
  • Bing is still the default search engine; however, Verizon has thrown in Google Search for good measure. Google Maps and Nav must still be downloaded separately.
  • Customize the Fascinate with one of 3 system fonts styles: Choco Cooky, Cool Jazz, and Rosemary (additional fonts available for download)
  • Visual upgrades to icons and new options for controlling Mobile Data & Auto Rotation in the notification panel.
  • Samsung's Media Hub allows you to download movies and TV shows.
  • Take screen shots by holding back and power.

Will this be the official Froyo update? I can't say for sure, but it appears about as final as Froyo gets. If you can't wait any longer, head on into the forums, where forums adviser Adrynalyne has packaged it up so you can share in the fun. Video and links to the unofficial update are after the break.

'Holographic' Honeycomb theme for Google Chrome now available

Roman Nurik has done it again. Nurik created the Android theme for Google Chrome, which has long been one of the most popular entries in the Chrome Extensions Gallery. Now he's released the next logical progression, a 'holographic' Honeycomb theme.

With inspiration taken from Android 3.0, Nurik's latest dumps the PCB pattern for diagonal stripes and blue-on-blue geometrics on the new tab page. It's every bit as well done as his original and we're curious to see if Honeycomb racks up as many installs as Android.

Add canned responses and snippets to Microsoft Outlook with Text Lightning

Want a quick way to add some pre-defined text to your Microsoft Outlook email messages? Text Lightning is a slick, free add-in which makes it easy to drop in custom signatures or any other boilerplate verbage you need fast access to. It's even got a product recognition feature which scans your message and then displays only snippets which it believes are relevant. Composing a reply? Text Lightning will automatically insert your preferred greeting and embed the sender's name for you.

And Text Lightning doesn't stop with mere text. It supports other file types, so you can stash commonly attached images, documents, and spreadsheets in its sidebar as well. There's also a built-in forgotten attachment detector and quick move button for zapping messages into your archive folders.

Version compatibility isn't spelled out on the Xequte website, but it worked well for me in Outlook 2003 and Martin at ghacks had success with Outlook 2010 -- so we fully expect Text Lightning also works with Outlook 2007.

Visualized: A very young Steve Jobs prepares for television

Back in the late 70's Steve Jobs wasn't exactly a household name, but he was important enough to appear on Nightline. The footage after the break is not of the actual interview, Steve's just getting his microphone and monitor set up, but he's visibly nervous and seemingly impressed with the technology around him. It's not exactly news, but it is a very interesting way to spend one minute and thirty-seven seconds on the internet.

[Thanks, GDub]
