Verizon iPhone, Who?s gettn? it?

So after all the rumors and the many, many requests for it, it’s here. So far, the Verizon iPhone has sold out before it even hit store shelves, which put to bed all the naysayers who thought there wouldn’t be many people  migrating to Verizon’s iPhone. Android users actually have another option besides another Android [...]

HP's TouchPad Tablet Looks Great, But Feels Slow [Video]

Although the Touchpad I played with is not the final version, my impression of the HP TouchPad is that it is slow. Not incredibly slow. But compared to, say, the Motorola Xoom or an iPad, I noticed slight delays between my touch and the interface moving around. More »

Malicious Software Removal Tool now cleans Cycobot infections

You may have noticed Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool in your list of available Windows Updates. Heck, you may even have seen it in your Add/Remove Programs and wondered where it came from. The MSRT can actually be quite useful, and it's a fast, simple way to remove a number of common malware infections.

In an update pushed yesterday, Microsoft added Cycobot to the list of malware that MSRT can remove. It's a nasty little backdoor Trojan, and one I've seen on plenty of the systems I spend my days repairing. The full list of malware (more than 120 types) which the tool can remove is available on this page.

MSRT is a good little tool to add to your security arsenal, but a multi-app attack is always best. Make sure you've got a good antivirus program installed, and keep Malwarebytes handy just in case.

(inbefore 'Does it remove Windows?', Linux users... )

HP TouchPad vs. iPad vs. Xoom vs. PlayBook: the tale of the tape

At last, the webOS-empowered TouchPad, HP's answer to the growing tablet market. And make no mistake, it's coming in with guns blazing -- specs-wise, the slate stands up pretty well to the competition currently in play (e.g. iPad) and the other up-and-comers not quite out the gate (e.g. Motorola Xoom and BlackBerry PlayBook). Stacked side-by-side, it's clear Apple's entry is lacking a bit in both memory (256MB vs. 1GB for everyone else) and front-facing camera -- not that we expect that to be the case for all of 2011. When it all comes down to it, what'll set these slates apart will be the platforms and software themselves -- should make for an interesting summer, no? In the meantime, for the nitty-gritty on technical specifications, venture past the break.

AppBrain direct push-to-device app installation returns, emasculates Google's Android Market

The supremo Android app discovery site, AppBrain, has re-enabled direct push-to-phone app install functionality.

Like before, you still need to install the Fast Web Installer app and AppBrain app on your Android device (QR codes after the break). You also need to open the Fast Web Installer app on your phone and give it permission to install apps. Then, it's simply a matter of clicking 'Install' on the AppBrain website and waiting a few seconds for the app to whiz its way across the interwebs to your device.

It's worth noting that you can now uninstall apps from the AppBrain control panel, too -- or mass-install apps on a new phone!

You still can't use the AppBrain website to buy apps -- and apps that aren't available in your territory will simply fail to transfer. Still, there's no avoiding the fact that this simple change makes Google's first-party Android Market website all but useless.

There's a video of AppBrain's push-to-device Fast Web Installer after the break.

Add custom search engines to your browser easily with Mycroft

One of the oldest -- yet somehow least-lauded projects in existence -- is Mycroft. Perhaps its under-hypedness is due to its total simplicity -- Mycroft is nothing more than a massive directory of search plug-ins that you can add to Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer. Check the top 100, and you'll get some idea of Mycroft's scale.

For Firefox and Internet Explorer, this means you can search just about every site in existence from the Search bar in the top right corner of your browser. For Chrome users, this means you get even more functionality from the uber Omnibar.

Incidentally, Chrome users, did you know that you could use specific search engines from the Omnibar? When you grab a search plug-in, make sure you provide a keyword. Make it something short -- like 'pb' for Pirate Bay or 'imdb' for IMDb -- and then, when you want to search The Pirate bay, just type pb, followed by your search term.

While we're on the same topic, in Firefox, you can do something similar with Smart keywords.
