HP TouchPad now official, will it woo you from Honeycomb tablets?

Over at Pre Central today HP unveiled their brand new TouchPad running webOS. Although we're rather XOOM focused here there is no denying the new TouchPad is fine piece of hardware. A 9.7-inch display at 1024x768, weighs a little more than 1.5 pounds and has a dual-core Qualcomm 8660 Snapdragon processor at 1.2GHZ. All of that backed up with 1GB of RAM and comes in 16GB or 32GB's. Just in case that wasn't enough to tickle your fancy, you'll also be getting a front-facing 1.3MP camera for video calling and a 6300 mAh battery. Overall, we're pretty impressed with what HP did with the TouchPad. The specs and hardware look great but we're waiting to see more. Although, we'll be waiting for summer to hear pricing and availability.

HP didn't stop at the TouchPad announcement though. They did go on to announce the HP Veer and the new Pre 3 all of which was in addition to what was most likely the most unexpected announcement. Yes, HP is dedicated to working on a complete ecosystem with webOS and they will indeed be working toward bringing it to PC's in the near future. Not a lot of details were outlined in that area but it's certainly something interesting to ponder. The Palm name may be dead but we're liking what HP has done thus far with webOS. Head on over to the source link for more details and highlights. [Pre Central]

HP Veer: smallest smartphone in the webOS stable, 2.6-inch display, coming this spring

You wanted a small smartphone? Well, you've got it in HP's Veer, the very first webOS-based device to bear the HP name alone without Palm's alongside packing Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7230 processor at 800MHz. Other headline specs include a 2.6-inch 320 x 400 display, 5 megapixel EDoF camera, HSPA+ support, 8GB of storage, an accelerometer, proximity and light sensors (as usual), Touchstone compatibility, and mobile hotspot support. It's genuinely cute -- but keyboard usability will be a big question that we'll need to have answered when the phone is released this spring. No word on carriers yet, and pricing is set to be decided upon "at a later date."

Update: Added the full press release and a demonstration video after the break, and our hands-on with the device can be found here!

uTorrent 3 hands on: zero-config Web control, streaming, and one-click file sharing

uTorrent LogouTorrent 3 beta [download link], which has been publicly available since the end of 2010, is now stable enough and juicy enough for you to sink your teeth into.

As far as actual torrenting goes, uTorrent 3 is very similar to its precursor, but it's now very apparent that this new version is about extending the BitTorrent protocol -- and the company -- into another space entirely.

The main new feature, which we alluded to when we reviewed uTorrent Remote for Android last week, is integration with uTorrent Web. uTorrent Web is a completely new offering from BitTorrent (the company) that offers secure and private zero-config control of your torrents via a Web control panel.

There's more, though! Video and music streaming makes its return, and 'Pulse' torrent ratings are making their debut. Finally, there's a new way to share files with your friends with the magic of TinyURL, BitTorrent, and 'Web Seeds.' Read on for the full hands-on treatment.

IBM's Mira Supercomputer Will Mop the Floor With China's Best [Supercomputers]

The sting of China's supercomputer dominance is still fresh, with the Tianhe-1A still laying claim to world's most greatest. That is, until IBM's Mira is completed. Because at 10 quadrillion calculations per second, she'll be four times faster than Tianhe-1A. USA! USA! That is, assuming it hasn't been leapfrogged by the time they actually build the darn thing. European Union's 'One charger for all' starts sampling, coming this year

It was way back in summer of 2009 that Nokia, Apple, RIM, and the rest of the mobile world agreed to make micro-USB the connector around which all future European chargers would be built. Since then, most of those companies have transitioned their hardware to micro-USB without further prompting, but the European Union is still pushing ahead with a universally compatible charger standard to make sure everything is nice and harmonized. The details of what's expected of these chargers were published in December and now the first samples of the new hardware have been produced. The EU expects all manufacturers to have chargers adhering to the new guidelines by the end of 2011 -- and if you're wondering about how Apple, one of the signatories to this agreement, will handle it, there's a note to say that adapters will be allowed on phones without a micro-USB port. Full press release after the break.

Bing caught copying search results from Google

Bingle
In a case of Internet espionage that makes the antics of double agent Cold War operatives seem like frivolous child play, Bing has been caught stealing search results from Google with its Bing toolbar and IE8's Suggested Sites feature.

Google first suspected foul play in May 2010. By October 2010, with Bing results beginning to look uncannily like Google's, it knew something had to be done about it -- and so, in true, nerdtastic style, Google set up a sting to prove that Microsoft was actually behind the wholesale mimicry of Google's search results.

Google injected "synthetic" results into its search engine -- fake queries and results that no real user or engine would ever generate. Then, on D-Day, December 17, about 20 Google engineers were asked to run the test queries with Internet Explorer 8, Bing Bar and Suggested Sites. By December 31, some of these fake results began appearing on Bing. See the examples after the break -- it's damning.

For a full discussion of Bing's antics, and what repercussions Microsoft might have to face, read the original Search Engine Land post.

CorelDraw video tutorial: Pulling in photos and clip art from the Web

corelconnect
This is the fourth (and final) of our CorelDRAW video tutorials. You can watch the others by browsing the CorelDRAW tag.

When creating a vector image or a composition, you don't always have to re-invent the wheel. After all, it is more than likely that whatever it is you're trying to do has been done before, at least in part. Using existing images or clip art ("media assets" in business parlance) can greatly speed up your work, and even improve the overall look of the image you produce.

To this end, I've chosen to create a video showing Corel Connect. It's a media search engine that comes with CorelDRAW, and helps you pull in images from Flickr, Fotolia, iStockphoto, and of course, your local hard drive and CorelDRAW's own clip art repositories.

Corel Connect ties in very tightly with CorelDRAW itself, and also does a nice job of protecting the original creator's rights so you don't "forget" to license whatever content you're using. See for yourself after the jump!
