Crosstalk for webOS enables easy Wi-Fi file sharing between devices

HP is holding a big webOS shindig tomorrow, and we're hoping that means the release of webOS 2 for the original Pre, Pre Plus and Pixi is imminent. Why? Because it means all webOS users will get to enjoy some slick, new apps like Crosstalk.

Designed for the new OS, Crosstalk enables users to share files from their webOS devices with nearby friends (who also happen to be using a webOS 2 device). Fire up the app, tap "friends near me," and then tap Share to get the ball rolling. Your pals can then download media stored on your device via your Wi-Fi network.

Crosstalk is a homebrew app, so you won't find it in the App Catalog. Instead, you'll need to use webOS Quick Install (WOSQI) -- but developer Jason Robitaille recently added webOS 2+ support to the app, so it's ready to push all the homebrew apps you can throw at it onto your HP/Palm hardware.

Check out the video after the break to see Crosstalk for webOS in action!

-- There are a lot of futuristic things we're still waiting on: jet packs for the entire family, self-driving cars and time-travel, to name a few. But one new, pretty darn amazing bit of technology has finally come to fruition, thanks to the folks at Microsoft.

Apple Buys Quattro Wireless to Battle Google in Mobile Ads

Apple bought mobile ad network Quattro Wireless. Quattro confirmed the purchase, which AllThingsDigital said was worth $275 million. The deal could accelerate the growing war between Apple and Google, friends quickly turned enemies in the pitched battle for the mobile Web. Chris Dixon, co-founder of decision engine Hunch and an investor in multiple properties, argued that Apple's interest in Quattro must be about ads in mobile apps. - Apple has acquired mobile ad network Quattro Wireless in a deal worth a reported $275 million, or roughly one third of what Google bid to buy mobile ad provider AdMob. Andy Miller, formerly Quattro CEO and co-founder but now Apple's vice president of mobile advertising, confirmed the acquisition...

Zero Motorcycles unveils faster-charging, even quieter 2011 motorcycle lineup (video)

To those who are still convinced that loud motorcycles make you more safe: it's best you look away now. The quietest bikes in the business just got even more silent. Zero Motorcycles just has unveiled its 2011 lineup of electric motorcycles and among a suite of generally tidy enhancements comes a change to belt drive. This means no more chains, no more chain lube, and no more rattling and grating noises. There's nothing but the sound of the wind and the faint scream of the motor, which you can hear for yourself in the video below. Also new is a 12.5 percent boost in battery capacity and a quick-charge option that drops charging times in half -- but does so at an up-front cost of $595. That's on top of the $9,995 for a road-going Zero S. Meanwhile the dual-sport Zero DS starts at $10,495, off-road Zero X at $7,995, and the higher-spec Zero MX $9,495. All are available for order right now.

Update: We spoke with the kind folks at Zero and got a little more information on that new trick charger. A current Zero S or Zero DS will take about four hours to charge, but if you opt for the $595 quick-charge it'll go down to just two hours -- though you can get a 90 percent in about an hour. The X and MX, meanwhile, can be fully charged in about an hour. This is without requiring any fancy plugs or DC converters, it's still just a standard 110 outlet!

[Thanks, Darius]

IP addresses are about to run out. Will the world end?

According to one IPv6 provider, we are now just days away from the IPv4 ARPAgeddon, or IPocalypse [not to be confused with the iPocalypse].

With IPv4 providing only 4.3 billion addresses, we all knew that the end of the reckless and fancy-free Internet era was coming -- we just didn't know when. The death knell has started to ring. Asia is on its knees plaintively pleading for its fix of IP addresses. Smartphones, the fastest growing market, will soon be unable to connect to the Internet. You might turn on your desktop PC, only to be told that you need to wait for an IP address to become available.

In short, it's now high time to consider our options.

How to make your own torrents and upload them to a public tracker

This week's series of tips is all about downloading files via BitTorrent. We'll highlight ways in which to torrent more efficiently, obtain higher download speeds, and generally make the whole process easier. For more tech tips, check our Tips index.

To wrap up our series of BitTorrent tips, we're going to show you how to make your own torrents. After all, torrents have to come from somewhere, right? You've been leeching for years -- isn't it time to give something back?

Just follow these simple steps:

  • Open up your BitTorrent client of choice. uTorrent, Vuze, Transmission -- whichever, they all work in the same way
  • File > Create Torrent (or simply hit the 'Create' button, if there is one)
  • Select a source file or directory -- this can be absolutely anything
  • Now you need to find some trackers. If you're making a torrent for a private torrent index, make sure you use its tracker. Otherwise, paste all of the following into the box:
    udp://tracker.publicbt.com:80/announce
    udp://tracker.openbittorrent.com:80/announce
    http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce
    http://tracker.torrent.to:2710/announce
  • If you want to add a comment, go for it! Include your name, website, email address -- whatever you like
  • Make sure Private Torrent is unchecked, unless you're creating a torrent for a private tracker
  • Click Create -- then add the new torrent to your client and start seeding!
Now, if you're just making a torrent to share a file between friends, classmates or workmates, just send them the .torrent file and tell them to hop on. It's as simple as that.

If you want to share your torrent publicly, you need to upload the torrent to an index like The Pirate Bay. First register an account, and then simply click 'Upload torrent' -- the method is the same for uploading to a private site (just make sure you've used its private tracker!)
